I was with him that day. I don't remember where we left from. I know earlier a patrol was sent up the hill and made contact . I remember John Ullrich had his bipod shot off his M 16. I also remember seeing some printed information taken from th NVA. ( propaganda concerning racial issues). Later that evening we started back up that same hill and Pineapple was walking point .We reached a fork in the trail and he went left with some more guys. Some of the guys were wanting a water break because I remember it was hot. I tooke off my steel pot and took a drink from my canteen. Pineapple and the guys horseshoed around and back into the main trail saying there was no place for an ambush because it dropped off too steeply. I was about the fifth guy back as we started up the trail and I remember it bending to the left and he disappeared out of sight . About 10 seconds later, I heard one distinct shot and then followed by a fully automatic burst. I am guessing the one shot was the kill shot and the burst was to keep us down. We immediately hit the ground and started returning fire in the general direction. We went up and retrieved his body and he was shot right behind the lower right ear. I think about it almost every day.

Who was with Pineapple when he was killed? Can some one remember where we flew out of? I know we had a hot LZ, worked our way up a river, set up on that little hill top and it was either the same day or the next when he was killed on patrol. 26 is working on correcting his info on the Wall web site. Did we lift out of LZ Sally or lift off of a firebase?
